Lately in the news we are hearing a lot about a Roadmap for Peace for the Israelis and the Palestinians. It got me to thinking about what it would take to have world-wide peace. I realize it is not going to happen, but it is a nice day-dream.
What if everyone on earth started respecting one another? That certainly would be a step in the right direction. It doesn't appear that mutual respect is a universal virtue.
It would definitely help if love was the guiding motive in all our actions and words. There is so much hate in the world. Often it is because of race or nationality. These are silly reasons to hate someone. But, there is really no good reason to hate.
What if everyone was concerned about their fellow-man? Wouldn't it be a much better world if everyone cared about each other. That certainly would make it difficult to have a war.
If we could somehow eliminate greed and selfish gain. That would take away most of the world conflict with one sweep. If we could all be willing and eager to share what we have and to help others to get what they need, it would be wonderful.
Suppose we could eliminate fear. Much of what people do is because of fear. Isn't it fear that caused us to go to war on Iraq? Our government was afraid that we would suffer in the future if this action was not taken. Without the fear it would never have happened.
It would be a step in the right direction if we would practice tolerance and try to understand our neighbors in the world. We need to understand that other cultures are different, and they have different values and ideas than we do. That should be expected and respected.
Of course we should treat everyone with dignity. That should go without saying, I would think, but unfortunately it does not. Many people simply refuse to allow others to live a dignified life. To me this is horrible and disgraceful. An eagerness to let everyone live their lives in a dignified way would be a good thing for our world.
Last, but certainly not least I will mention compassion. Why is it people are so lacking of compassion sometimes? Since there is so much suffering in the world you would think it would be easy to be compassionate, yet we see so much cruelty and lack of kindness all around us.
Yes, I realize I am only day-dreaming here, but wouldn't it be wonderful if these ideas would be our reality?
That would be a true road-map to peace.
